Tools for Your Success: Getting the Right Things Done

April 24th, 2008

WORD COUNT: 408 Short  … Yet Genuine Words

TIME to EXPAND : * About 1 1/2 MINUTES *

Your To DO LIST may never be empty. So make peace with the fact that you can always do more.

However, a shift in perspective can dissolve the stress you feel when all you see is the stuff … that didn’t get done.

Have you every felt overwhelmed by the shear number of items staring back at you? Regardless of whether you use Outlook or a Day Planner, the story is the same.

Often we feel more like human doings, than human beings. Regardless of the tools used, ultimately it is a shift in thinking that will help you get more of the right things done.

The answer lies in choosing a “To Do List Perspective” that empowers and supports you.

Here are 3 simple things you can try immediately to develop a healthier relationship with your TO DO list.

1. Remove the word TASK from your vocabulary. Don’t use it anymore. I’m not kidding :-) . Consider all of our social programming connected to this little word. We can’t help but conjure up thoughts of “taskmasters and hard work” … which is of course, counterproductive.

I prefer to use the word CHOICES, because it more accurately reflects the true impact of a TO DO list. Thinking of “Choices” instead of “Tasks”, reminds you that your TO DO list is not in charge … you are.  The word choices also prompts us to be mindful of how we spend our time. What determines our reality? Our choices. So claim back you personal power – get rid of the task and embrace the choice!

2. Start each day by deciding what you will NOT DO today. Move it to another day or delete it. Personally, I really enjoy this. My list gets shorter and it helps me focus on what really matters. It also keeps me from getting sidetracked, so I accomplish more while doing less.

3. At the end of the day, recognize every positive contribution you made and celebrate your successes! What could be more uninspiring than looking at what didn’t get done? Think instead about the gifts you shared and the people you helped!

So give yourself a BIG PAT ON THE BACK. You deserve it! Then be thankful for the opportunity to make new choices and contributions tomorrow!

Play with your “Choice List” and see if you don’t enjoy more of the journey … as you get more of the right things done. Think of this as your very own sandbox!
