Right Action: Leveraging Time and Energy

WORD COUNT: 575 Short … Yet Empowering Words
TIME to GROW: * About 2 MINUTES*
To get more of the Right Things done, ask:
1. What do I really want?
2. Why do I want this?
3. What’s the best route possible from where I am now?
By knowing what you really want and why you want it, you reach a deeper understanding of what motivates you. You discover the desired experiences that are inspiring your goals.
This is important because knowing the “what and why” helps us get really clear about what we want. Clarity in turn helps us filter out the distractions that can take us off course.
Once we know what we want and why we really want it, the best route possible presents itself.
I once had a client, Gary, who decided he wanted to “make as much money as possible, while working as little as possible”. He wanted to play a lot more with family and friends.
Some people may read this and say “that sounds lazy” or “that’s not possible.” Pay attention to how you react, because it gives you powerful clues about the underlying beliefs influencing your success. You may discover thoughts such as “work is supposed to be hard”, “that may work for some people, but not for me” or “success requires great sacrifice”.
It’s an empowering step when we uncover the source of unrealized goals. Once we identify unsupportive beliefs, we can neutralize them with new convictions that move us positively forward.
By the way, this individual has a very successful business, about 20 dedicated and trustworthy employees, a lakefront home and a vacation home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He also takes about 12 weeks of vacation or more every year without any loss of revenue. His business model perfectly reflects his desire to work less and play more.
Gary believed that he could spend more time with his family and still experience all of the finer things in life he wanted. Here’s where many people stumble.
Are you afraid of too much success? Do you believe that more business translates to more stress, or less time for family, friends or quiet reflection?
In this example, there were no conflicting signals. So Gary accomplished what many people believe is impossible – a profitable business, prosperity and lots of time for play and relaxation. All this and he’s doing something that provides great benefits to his customers and his team.
Because he was really clear about what he wanted and WHY he wanted it, his mind automatically found ways to help him grow his business in a way that was aligned with the real inspiration behind the goals – more playtime with the people he loved.
The point is, when you know what you really want and why you want it, you don’t get sidetracked by the stuff that doesn’t matter. You’re not trying on goals to “see if they fit”, because you know what you truly want and why it’s important to you.
When you’re really clear, it’s easy to make good decisions and reach your desired destination faster and with greater ease. Why? Because you’re traveling in a straight line, without the detours and an added bonus – you also enjoy more of the journey!
So consider your “Personal Success Statement”. Then ask:
1. Is this what I really want?
2. Why do I want this?
3. What’s the best route possible from where I am now?
Decide, Be, Plan then Do!
