Go Toward, Not Away From

TIME to Progress: * How about 3 Minutes? *
Most of us need a very compelling reason to change.
According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, 60% of the population prefers to take in information as long as possible before acting. This is called “Pressure Prompting”, and means that many people use a negative to motivate them into action. In other words, they may wait until the last minute to act, using the shortage of time to move them forward. Another common scenario is to use the lack of something, for example, money, to push past the fear of rejection, or give up counterproductive habits.
Although this approach can work for the short term, it can actually work against you, unless you switch from the initial negative to a forward-moving positive.
Here’s why that’s true. Your mind will immediately seek answers and filter information or potential threats according to the assignments you give it. So if your mind is filtering for the lack of time, or the scarcity of money, that will actually serve to draw more of what’s not wanted toward you.
When the mind is in a defensive posture seeking to protect you against a potential threat, it stays focused on the problem, rather than finding a solution. So if you continue to focus on the threat, you increase your level of stress, and keep the lack portion of the equation active in your energy field.
Bottom line, whatever you focus upon expands in your experience. The answer rests in learning to shift your focus to move “toward something”, rather than “away from it”. So even if you used procrastination or scarcity to get over an initial hump, you’ll want to quickly move your focus to the desired outcome…in order to move toward what you truly want.
So here’s what that might look like. If you started with “If I don’t act now, I’ll run out of money in two months” to propel you away from, you might move toward “I am receiving $___________ or more every month, and love how it feels to have a positively abundant cash flow. I easily build on what I have, and happily leverage my unique talents to fulfill a need.” Here’s another example, moving from “I don’t like how I feel or look in my clothes anymore” might become “My body is my personal temple and worthy of great care. I like being physically fit, and love the increased energy and restful sleep. I really enjoy nurturing my mind, body and soul. ”
Get a clear picture of what you really want to move toward, and focus on that. Let everything else go!
