Do you have a recurring daydream that’s been with you for awhile?
It’s perfectly okay to say yes! For the images we often dismiss as childish fantasies, are actually invaluable insights about our life’s purpose, and our deepest desires!
So become an active participant in your daydreams and you’ll discover the transformative messages within them.
Here’s an example. I have daydreamed about being a figure skater since I was a little girl. I’d see myself gliding effortlessly on the ice, doing figure eights, triple axles and always landing perfectly and effortlessly, as I continued to glide from landing to the next turn, and on and on I’d go.
If you know me, you may be smiling at this image. As much as I’d like to say I’m athletic and graceful, I’m a far cry from Peggy Fleming, Kristi Yamaguchi or Michelle Kwan.
Does this daydream mean that I missed my chance to become an Olympic skater? It would, if I didn’t look beyond the literal meaning. By playing out the fantasy, by asking my “skater self” what I needed to know about this recurring picture, I was able to learn more about my life’s purpose, and my higher ideals of a life well lived.
The image of the graceful figure skater is a symbolic one. It told me that I wanted to experience more ease and grace. By engaging in this symbolic dream, I learned that one of my soul’s deepest desires was to go more with the flow. I wanted to dissolve some of the disempowering concepts about life and work that had me feeling like a human doing, rather than a human being.
As I peel away the layers, I discover the beliefs that keep me from enjoying more of my journey. This discovery led me to the guides, skills and attributes that would help me shed my self-created stressful thoughts and habits. Rest assured I’m not always there, yet I feel so much more empowered and “in love with life” than I was just a few short years ago.
Our paths are filled with clues about who we are, and what we really want in life. Insights are all around us, if we just take a moment to explore them.
There are many other layers I’ve uncovered as I continue to explore the meaning of the images around me. For example, at root of the graceful figure skater is the symbol of the infinity loop.
That core image was a clue about the nature of personal reality and universal creative principles.
It meant that if we want more ease in human form, we need to give up the inner struggle, and honor every aspect of our being … the emotional, as well as the intellectual, the spiritual and the physical, the head and the heart.
To live a more graceful life meant I needed to get Fred and Ginger to dance together. And leading with the heart, would require inner strength and trust, especially when you feel a lot more comfortable in the mental realm, like I did.
You might be thinking, that’s a lot to get from a daydream. You’re right, it is.
So here’s the moral of the story. I could have dismissed that image as childish fantasy, but I’m glad that I didn’t. For the insights I gained helped me understand a lot more about my nature than I would have otherwise realized.
And by exploring your mental images, you understand more about who you really are, and what you want in this lifetime. What an incredible gift!
By actively participating in your daydreams, you also help yourself in another important way. You’re rewiring the neuropathways in the brain, in support of your deepest desires!
In the case of my figure skater, I’m reminded to invite more ease and grace into my life. By imagining the elegant movements, the resulting rewired neuropathways help me upon up to more empowering perspectives, about living a more balanced and graceful life.
So embrace your inner musings and fantasies. They’re talking to you, and your life is waiting!
