24KT Planning: Small Steps & BIG Dreams

TIME to EXPAND YOUR POTENTIAL: About 2 Minutes

One of the most frequent questions about planning is - should I go for the gold, and really aim high, or take small steps? I think each person is best served by using the approach that works best for them, given their personal preferences. Here’s why.

Only you can know how you feel when you set a goal. Sometimes it’s exhilarating, and sometimes it’s really scary. Some of us are natural born risk takers and are very comfortable with the big and lofty goals. Others are not. They may start out feeling excited and then the self-doubt sets in. Then they second-guess and ask, am I good enough?

If the negative-self talk takes over, we can get really discombobulated and turned upstream away from where we’re trying to go. We can’t harvest the gold that is planted around us, when we’re in self-doubt and fear.

So here’s one way you could constructively use both the “Shoot for the Moon” approach and the “Let’s Take Small steps” to your advantage.Consider that the BIG dream or goal, and what gets you really excited, is your highest concept of a perfect outcome. It’s your vision of how remarkable things could be.

Keep that ideal vision, your masterpiece, in mind as you set smaller goals, taking one step at a time, as your confidence expands with each step. Of course, give yourself plenty of time to thoroughly enjoy the journey! Before long, you build positive momentum and you are at your most ideal destination.
Michael Dell, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Dell Computer, looks at it this way – “Swing for hits, not home runs.“

By the way, Mr. Dell, founded his company in 1984 with just $1,000 and a very unique idea at the time, to build relationships directly with customers. In 1992, at the tender age of 27, he became the youngest CEO ever to run a Fortune 500 company.
I’d say he hit a home run, wouldn’t you?
You can be, do or create absolutely anything.  Just take one enjoyable step at a time!
